چکیده

This paper describes mobility management for the third-generation mobile networks. We focus on the evolution from General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) to Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS). In this evolution, the radio access network UTRAN has been introduced, and radio-related management is moved from the core network to UTRAN. We elaborate on how this architecture change affects the mobility management functionality, including the attach and detach procedures, location update, serving radio network controller relocation and intersystem change between GPRS and UMTS.

Signaling Measurements on the Packet Domain of 3G-UMTS Core Network

There is significant signaling message activity in Universal Mobile Telecommunication Systems (UMTS) among Core Network (CN) elements for the mobility management of UMTS subscribers. The time-overhead introduced with the performance of these signaling operations is a crucial factor that determines the overall performance of UMTS technology and affects greatly the application Quality of Service ...

A Tiered Mobility Management Solution for Cellular/WLAN Integrated Networks with Low Handoff Delay

Demand for the Internet services through GPRS/3G networks is proliferating day-by-day. But low bit rate puts constraints on multimedia or mobile business services. In contrast, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) provide high bit rate with low deployment cost. Therefore, integration of these two complementary systems would be the focus of next generation wireless networks. However mobility and...

MPLS Based Mobility Framework in 4G Architectures

In this paper, an integration framework for 4Gnetwork architecture between UMTS-GPRS system and 802.11 WLAN systems using MPLS as the underlying technology is developed. In 4G networks, to suffice the needs of users with relatively low mobility but yet to provide a substantial amount of bandwidth in hot-spots, it becomes essential to integrate WLAN 802.11 systems with currently existing UMTS-GP...

Seamless Handover between UMTS and GPRS

UMTS is one step ahead from the 2.5G network GPRS and supports faster data rates with wide coverage area. GPRS and UMTS are already deployed in many countries but seamless handover between GPRS and UMTS still remains as a stumbling block for the service providers to fulfill the continuously increasing customer demand for internet and data access in the IP-based wireless network and to maintain ...

Wireless World Research Forum ( WWRF ) 1 Mobility Management in beyond 3 G - Environments

Beyond 3G-environments are typically defined as environments that integrate different wireless and fixed access network technologies. In this paper, we address IP based Mobility Management (MM) in beyond 3G-environments with a focus on wireless access networks, motivated by the current trend of WiFi, GPRS, and UMTS networks. The GPRS and UMTS networks provide countrywide network access, while t...
